Dialysis

Dialysis:

Dialysis is a form of renal replacement therapy. Dialysis typically starts when approximately 90% of the kidney function is lost and kidney disease has advanced to the point where life-threatening complications can occur. The decision of when to start dialysis depends on the discussion between the nephrologist, the patient, and the patient’s family. The Nephrologist decides the need for starting dialysis based on kidney function tests, the patient’s overall health, nutritional status, symptoms, quality of life, and personal preferences. There are two modalities of dialysis- Haemodialysis and Peritoneal dialysis. The choice between both modalities of dialysis is influenced by availability, convenience, underlying medical problems, home situation, and age. This choice is best made by discussing the risks and benefits of each type of dialysis with the treating nephrologist.

  • Rajendra Hospital has the latest generation, fully computerized bicarbonate haemodialysis machines with volumetric ultrafiltration and adjustable sodium facility, providing a better patient safety profile.  We have a state-of-the-art computerized dialyzer re-use system which ensures the safety adequacy of dialysis and also economizes dialysis for the patients. For patient safety, we do Heat-clean disinfection of haemodialysis machines after every shift. To ensure patient safety and prevent long-term complications, we provide R.O. (Reverse Osmosis) water for dialysis. We continuously monitor sick patients on dialysis through highly sophisticated monitors throughout the dialytic procedure available at our centre.
  • At Rajendra Hospital, we regularly do More than 700 haemodialyses in a month (four dialysis shifts of 4 hrs) by highly trained technical and nursing staff under the supervision of two dialysis medical officers under the overall supervision and guidance of consultants.
